Karina Collins in her studio (2009)
BIOGRAPHY
Irish artist Karina Collins lives and works in Cork City. She studied Arts at Nottingham University where she developed a keen interest in 20th century art.
In 1998 she moved to Zurich where she furthered her studies in fine art, and painted with a collaborative group of local artists. In 2001 she moved to Munich and worked with interior designers, receiving large and small scale commissions for bars, restaurants and offices including Hewlett Packard HQ and Lufthansa. She had her first sell-out solo exhibition at the Munchener Volkshochschule in 2000 and the Maulberger Gallery in 2001. Collins' work explores modern themes like isolation and disconnection, alongside timeless classics like love, loss and innocence.
In 2004 Collins returned to Ireland and started selling her paintings through shops and private viewings. She has exhibited at shows and galleries around the country, including the Cork Vision Centre in 2008. Her works are held in private collections in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, France and America.
Karina Collins was President of the Maclise Art Society in 2008 and became Special Projects Editor with Irish Art in 2009.
"I love painting people and try my best to portray what they are feeling through the use of colour and composition. For example, when I painted my two women propped against a bar counter, isolated in their thoughts, I pictured the scene in moody blues with a touch of scarlet red. When I think of kids playing on a beach, those long summer days that never seem to end, I picture it in sky blue and Indian yellow. As a ballerina takes her first tentative steps on stage, I visualise her in a crisp white dress, her hair flowing freely, unhindered by the uncertainties that adulthood brings".
REVIEWS
"Her quirky figurative compositions have proved popular with collectors and art-lovers in Ireland and on the Continent."
